A Tribute to Gavin Lyall

OPERATION WARBOARD

We payed homage to the author of one of the classics of wargaming literature; Gavin Lyall who’s OPERATION WARBOARD brought WW2 wargaming to the masses. Our game; Bridge over the River Quai was set in the summer 1944, somewhere in Normandy. The bridge over the river had to be taken. The mission was to take your battlegroup and secure it! 3 games identical games were available to play side by side on the table presented to represent what players have used over time as the hobby grew and more resources became available.

The first was with Airfix troops and models straight out the box with the simple starter terrain many of us recall – the books, blankets and boxes full of bendy plastic tanks and soldiers. The second; a  Student’s Edition of Wargaming with tanks and figures assembled and painted by youngsters (and repaired several times after they’ve dropped during play), with classic buildings. The third; a “Pro Edition” We used pro painted models from more expensive ranges and buildings from our club collection.
